May 16, 2023—Cypress Woods High School students Isabella Jaramillo, Emily Hacking, Megan Janger and Nicole Howard placed third in Group Theatrical Design at the UIL State Theatrical Design Contest held May 2-3 at the Round Rock ISD Performing Arts Center.

The 2023 contest required students to create original designs for Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in a new theatrical adaptation by Dorothy Louise. The Cypress Woods quartet chose to design a science fiction version of Frankenstein, focusing on the parallels between the story of Frankenstein and how modern digital technology can be harmful when placed in the wrong hands.

“We are extremely proud of our Wildcat Group Theatrical Design team for advancing and placing as second runner-up at the UIL State Theatrical Design Contest,” said Toby Drake, Cypress Woods head theatre director. “We have consistently been to state with numerous recognitions, and this group with their unique concept and their talent for design brought home this distinguished honor. These students and their creative ideas are an inspiration to the design process, and we are in awe of the work they have created in the areas of scenic, costumes, marketing and hair and makeup to bring the play Frankenstein to life. They worked tirelessly to bring that extra degree of effort that took their team into medal contention. Now their work will be displayed and celebrated at various UIL events across the state! This team represents the 212 spirit and we are so proud of their accomplishments!”
