Cy Woods HS students win state championship at UIL State Theatrical Design Contest

Cypress Woods High School students, from left, Marcus Alfaro, Isabella Jaramillo, Megan Janger and Emily Hacking, won the state championship in Group Theatrical Design at the UIL State Theatrical Design Contest, held May 10-11 at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center. 

May 24, 2024—Cypress Woods High School students Emily Hacking, Isabella Jaramillo, Megan Janger and Marcus Alfaro placed first overall in Group Theatrical Design at the UIL State Theatrical Design Contest, held May 10-11 at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center.

The 2024 contest required students to create original designs for Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown. Students were also asked to select a theme and create a thematic statement to include a motif, concept or commanding image to drive all design decisions and have those decisions be evident throughout all design choices.

In addition to winning a state championship, Cypress Woods junior K’Laya Moore placed sixth overall in Marketing Design.

“We are so proud of these students, they truly went above and beyond,” said Colleen Morgan, Cypress Woods assistant theatre director. “This competition is a lengthy process and watching their projects grow throughout the year is so inspirational. They have poured a lot into each design and their success at the state competition is a testament to that work. We couldn’t be prouder of them!”
