May 5, 2022—More than 160 CFISD students representing all 12 high schools were honored and celebrated for their aspirations to become classroom teachers at the district's first-ever Future Educators Signing Day, held April 27 at the Berry Center.

Put on by the CFISD human resources department, family members, friends and campus and district staff recognized the accomplishments of students enrolled in Child Guidance and Teaching and Training courses. As part of the Ready, Set, Teach! program, which launched in 2008, students are placed in education internships and partnerships with neighboring campuses and work with current staff to garner early interest in the profession.

“The kids are the best part of the program,” Cypress Woods High School junior Sophie Sistrunk said. “Just meeting all the kids and seeing them so excited when you walk in the room.”

A brief program included remarks from Dr. Mark Henry, CFISD superintendent of schools, and Roy Garcia, chief officer of school leadership. Each congratulated participants on their accomplishments and referenced former teachers who made lasting impressions from childhood through their paths in education.

In addition, Kayla Diaz, a LIFE Skills teacher at Cypress Ridge High School, gave a first-hand account as a former student starting her career. Diaz participated in Ready, Set, Teach! while as a student at Cypress Springs High School.

“This is special because we get to celebrate what’s going on in our district,” said Greg Lozano, CFISD assistant director of human resources. “The Child Guidance courses and education training are a part of our curriculum and instruction that go unnoticed sometimes. We hope that we can start a lasting tradition that celebrates students for years and years, and brings them back to CFISD so they can serve the community that served them.”
