June 9, 2021—Cypress Creek High School Air Force Junior ROTC Cadet Karli McMillin was selected as the second runner-up in the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (TXSSAR) Enhanced JROTC Program contest in May.
The contest is part of the SAR ROTC/JROTC Recognition Program, which awards medals to foster the principle of the “citizen-soldier” as exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. The enhanced JROTC Program is for outstanding cadets in their third year of a four-year JROTC program who show high degrees of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing and general excellence.
“It is such an honor to receive the Sons of American Revolution award,” McMillin said. “JROTC has opened so many doors for my future. As a freshman, I never thought JROTC would have such a great impact on who I am today and who I will become. I have learned to listen to my inner self and to always complete every task to the best of my ability.
“These are great traits to carry on through anyone’s life, and the JROTC program expands on the importance of these skills.”
McMillin was nominated by Cypress Creek JROTC instructors Lt. Col. Paul Hinson (Ret.) and SMSgt. John Schwartz.
John Thompson, Texas ROTC/JROTC State Chairman, and CFISD Board of Trustees member Tom Jackson presented McMillin with a medal and recognition certificate on May 6. In addition, McMillin received a $500 award from TXSSAR and a $150 honorarium from the PineyWoods Chapter, which sponsored McMillin for the statewide contest.
“We’re incredibly proud of Karli’s accomplishment of being selected as the second runner-up in the Texas SAR Extended JROTC contest,” Hinson said. “We are also very appreciative of organizations such as the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution that recognize top-performing JROTC cadets. We appreciate the continued support of the Air Force JROTC program from Tom Jackson in his role as a trustee in the National Society of the SAR; John Thompson, Texas SAR ROTC/JROTC State Chairman; and Cypress Creek High School Principal Vicki Snokhous.”
