Nov. 22, 2022—In what has become a much-anticipated annual event at Cy-Fair High School, the Bobcats’ volleyball team other girls’ athletic programs teams came together at the end of October to host their Pink Out Pep Rally in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The rally, held Oct. 19 at the school’s main gym, brought staff, students and members of the Cy-Fair High School community together to raise proceeds for Cleaning for a Cause, a non-profit organization that cleans the homes of cancer patients. Shirts were sold to raise money and worn by those in attendance.
“My favorite Pink Out tradition is awarding the money to the cancer survivors and patients,” said Rebecca Wells, a Cy-Fair girls’ assistant soccer coach and cancer survivor herself. “Some of the bills are outrageous and ridiculous.”

The rally featured performances by the Cy-Fair band, Brigade, cheerleaders and step team.
The highlight came when pink wreaths made by members of the softball, girls’ soccer, girls’ track and field and volleyball teams were gifted to breast cancer survivors of the Cy-Fair High School community who attended. Each honoree was also gifted a bouquet of pink flowers and a gift bag.
Following the presentation of gifts, team captains from each respective sport shared facts about breast cancer to those in attendance.
“It was good that they shared all of that information because some of that I didn't even know myself,” said Phylicia Harding, a Cy-Fair algebra teacher.

Added Athletic Trainer Nicholas Portillo: “Sports have a big platform. They can shine a brighter light than most people when it comes to breast cancer awareness.”
A lot of important information was shared at the rally, including tips for best prevention for breast cancer and the importance of early detection. Staying in good health is a vital part in reducing the risk of developing breast cancer.
Simply having the dialogue and sharing the information was a positive takeaway for most attending the event.

“I think it is important to talk about breast cancer and to highlight how important it is that as women and as young females, we need to be very mindful to go and get checked every single year,” said Ana Martin, Cy-Fair principal. “If you do get checked and they detect something early, it could possibly save your life,”
The Pink Out Pep Rally is just another example of Cy-Fair High School showcasing ‘Bobcat Fight Never Dies.’
“I love the way ‘BFND’ shows how much we care about this cause,” said Dominick Chiles, a Cy-Fair student athletic trainer. “I love it.”
