Bridgeland High School’s UIL One-Act Play, Henry Lumper, placed second at the UIL Class 6A One-Act Play State Competition held May 6 in Round Rock. The 2023 contest is the first appearance and placement at the state competition for the Bridgeland High School Theatre Company.

May 12, 2023—Bridgeland High School’s UIL One-Act Play production earned second place at the UIL Class 6A One-Act Play State Competition held May 6 at the Round Rock ISD Performing Arts Center.

Bridgeland’s production, Henry Lumper, was among the top eight Class 6A plays in the state.

“Bridgeland competing at the state one-act competition ended CFISD’s 12-year hiatus at this level,” said Adam Delka, Bridgeland head theatre director. “We made Bridgeland High School history with our debut at state, as we are still considered a new school. In the past three years we have advanced to region and last year we were the region alternate to state, but I knew this year would be special. We have an incredibly talented group of performers and technicians. We set a goal this year to make it to state and we achieved it, which is a dream come true. The students have dedicated themselves to our productions and the art form, striving for improvement and excellence every step of the way. I am beyond proud.”

Bridgeland High School senior Rex Koern added, “I don’t think of myself as just an actor, more of an artist collaborating with other artists. There is nothing more fulfilling than working with a dedicated group of people to bring a story to life, paying homage to the characters and writer’s intent.”

In addition to earning the silver medal, Bridgeland finished with the third most overall theatre one-act play points at the state level.

“Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is extremely proud of the Bridgeland High School theatre company and their production of Henry Lumper,” said John Morrison, director of fine arts. “Bridgeland’s cast and crew were certainly a fantastic mix of grit and determination for this season. The recognition as the state silver medalist is the icing on the top for the closing of this UIL season.”
