Dec. 21, 2021—Tipps Elementary School staff welcomed students and family and community members on campus for its annual Winter Wonderland Literacy Night on Dec. 14, combining the love of reading and storytelling with games, activities and other holiday excitement.

Hosted by the campus language arts and choir departments, Literacy Night is an annual event that returned in person after Tipps staff members put on a virtual showcase in 2020.

“Literacy Night is to share the love of reading but to also be able to share with families ways that they can implement reading strategies at home with their student,” said LaShonda Johnson, Tipps language arts instructional specialist. “It’s about bringing the families and students out and getting them involved together, so then they can take those activities home and continue enforcing those skills.”

The evening began with a performance from the Tipps choir. The carols and holiday songs helped bridge the “Winter Wonderland” theme with literacy.

“We love ringing in the holidays,” Tipps Principal Felicia Thomas said. “It’s a common theme that brings us all together. So, we share that while sharing this love of reading.”

Following the performance, the students and families went to different activities on campus and rotated based on grade level.

Teachers led literacy enrichment activities in the classroom instructional areas. Students competed in bingo in the gym, with books available to each winner.

Students made holiday crafts in the art room, while a hot cocoa bar and photo opportunities with Santa Clause were also available.

“Growing up in a small town, we got to go to the high school and see positive things happening which gave us excitement and made us want to do those things,” Thomas said. “It gave us aspirations. When they see what the junior high and high school kids are doing. They’ll want to do those things. So, we wanted to bring that here for them to see.”
