CFISD runners finish season at Cross Country State Championships

Senior Cassidy Graham helped the Bridgeland High School girls’ cross country team finish 11th in Class 6A at the UIL Cross Country State Championships, held Nov. 6 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Graham was the team’s top finisher, posting a time of 18:38.3 to finish 21st overall. The Bears reached state as a team for the third time in four years in the state’s largest classification.

Nov. 11, 2021—The Bridgeland High School girls’ cross country team placed 11th overall in Class 6A with a team score of 285 at the UIL Cross Country State Championships, held Nov. 6 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

Senior Cassidy Graham led the Bears with a time of 18:38.3 to finish 21st overall. Senior Allison Millan placed 61st overall with a time of 19:31.7, senior Madeleine Wilson finished 63rd with a time of 19:34.2 and freshman Lily Fawcett placed 64th with a time of 19:39.3. Junior Macie Gunn posted a time of 19:58.4 to finish 76th overall. Junior Emily Ellis and senior Elisa Grillo rounded out the Bears’ state meet with times of 20:17.9 and 20:38.2, respectively.

The state appearance was the Bears’ third over the last four years in the state’s largest classification.

“The girls competed well at state,” said Tom Kennedy, Bridgeland girls’ cross country head coach. “We were a little dinged up from the season but managed to place 11th. This was the third time in four years that the ladies have been to the state meet as a team and proves that we're one of the programs that will likely contend for a state spot year in and out. I thought the seniors closed their careers out well and I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone improves in track.”

In the 6A boys’ division, Cypress Ridge senior Devon Simmons was the top finisher from CFISD at the state meet. Simmons finished 66th overall with a time of 16:15.3. He was the second state qualifier in Cypress Ridge history.

“Ram nation is very proud of this young man,” said Daniel Cantu, Cypress Ridge cross country head coach. “Devon Simmons represented Cypress Ridge very well and had a tremendous season. To top it off, he got a new personal record at the state meet. We wish him the best at the next level.”

“The state cross country meet was a phenomenal opportunity for Manny to go against the best there is,” said Larry Boykin, Cypress Springs cross country head coach. “He’s an example of where dedication and unrelenting efforts can take you. He’s truly phenomenal. As a sophomore representing this district, his future has no limits. What a pleasure it’s going to be to watch him continue to soar higher!”
