Board approves Dr. Mark Henry as namesake for new administration building

Nov. 9, 2021—The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the namesake for the new administration building as Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent of schools, during its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 8.

Dr. Henry is in his 11th year as CFISD superintendent, and is celebrating his 40th year in education. Prior to joining CFISD in 2011, Dr. Henry served as superintendent of schools for Galena Park ISD for seven years. While in GPISD, he was named a finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year, Region 4 ESC Superintendent of the Year and ATPE Texas Administrator of the Year.

He has served as a superintendent in Texas for 31 years. He began as superintendent of schools for Milford ISD from 1991 to 1993, then moved to Collinsville ISD from 1993 to 1998. He accepted the position at Sulphur Springs ISD in 1998 and served through 2004.

In addition to Dr. Henry’s experience as superintendent, he began his career in 1982 as a teacher, and then gained administrative experience while serving as a middle and high school assistant principal and principal. He was an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University at Commerce from 1999 to 2004.

During his time in CFISD, he was named Region 4 ESC Superintendent of the Year and a finalist for Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2018. Under his leadership, the district has won many awards, including the H-E-B Excellence Award in Education and a No.1 rating by the Education Resource Group (ERG) for Best Overall in Academic Performance and Financial Performance. Among his successful long-term initiatives as CFISD superintendent were launching a leadership development continuum and spearheading curriculum initiatives to close the achievement gap between student subgroups.

“I am touched and humbled by this honor from the Board of Trustees,” Dr. Henry said. “There is no greater honor for me than to receive a building namesake in a premier school district, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. This is a special community where every campus and support facility is dedicated to supporting student success, and I am proud to call it ‘home.’”

Built with 2019 Bond funds, the new administration building will be located at 11440 Matzke Road, on the same site as a new visual and performing arts center. Designed by PBK, the 220,000-sq.-ft. facility is being built by Satterfield & Pontikes on property adjacent to Cy-Fair High School.

The facility consists of a five-story office tower with offices, work spaces, conference rooms, and collaborative areas to support more than 700 employees. The first floor of the administration building also houses a 250-seat board room and a conference center. Substantial completion date is scheduled for November 2022.
