Three CFISD swimmers earn four state titles at state swim meet

Feb. 22, 2022—Four CFISD swimmers earned gold, silver or bronze medals, and 21 others placed in the top 15 at the UIL Swimming and Diving Class 6A State Meet, held Feb. 18-19 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.

Cypress Creek High School senior Hayden Miller led CFISD swimmers by earning two state titles in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.27) and the 500-yard freestyle, setting a new Class 6A state record in the process (4:41.11). Miller was also named the Class 6A Female State Swimmer of the Meet.

Bridgeland High School junior Emma Kinsey earned a state title in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.39) and saw the podium again by placing third overall in the 100-yard butterfly (54.36).

Cypress Woods High School junior Benjamin Scholl added a new state title to his resume by winning the 50-yard freestyle (20.22). Scholl also placed second overall in the 100-yard freestyle (44.11).

CFISD’s other top-15 female finishers are as follows:

  • Cy-Fair High School sophomore Ella Smoker – third place, 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.92) and sixth place, 200-yard individual medley (2:03.28);
  • Bridgeland 200-yard medley relay – Sophia Avery, Erin Ware, Emma Kinsey and Aidyn Lawton – 14th place (1:48.62);
  • Bridgeland 400-yard freestyle relay – Kennedy Hudson, Aidyn Lawton, Emma Kinsey and Sophia Avery – 14th place (3:36.14);
  • Cy-Fair 200-yard medley relay – Maddie Nguyen, Ella Smoker, Amy Nguyen and Sofia Luper – seventh place (1:46.82);
  • Cy-Fair 200-yard freestyle relay – Maddie Nguyen, Bryn Waller, Mary Ruland and Sofia Luper – 10th place (1:37.75);
  • Cy-Fair 400-yard freestyle relay – Bryn Waller, Mary Ruland, Amy Nguyen and Ella Smoker – 13th place (3:34.38);
  • Cy-Fair freshman Sofia Luper – fourth place, 100-yard freestyle (51.65) and 10th place, 200-yard individual medley (2:04.09); and
  • Cypress Woods freshman Chloe McKnight – ninth place, 1-meter diving (295.70)

CFISD’s other top-15 male finishers are as follows:

  • Bridgeland 200-yard medley relay – Henry Hugele, Thomas Ryder, Brantson Bui and Levi Thome 12th place (1:35.41);
  • Bridgeland junior Levi Thome – 13th place, 100-yard freestyle (46.35);
  • Bridgeland sophomore Henry Hugele – 14th place, 100-yard backstroke (50.89);
  • Cypress Creek junior Wes Miles – 11th place, 100-yard butterfly (50.02);
  • Cy-Fair senior Matthew Bittner – ninth place, 100-yard backstroke (49.91) and 12th place, 200-yard freestyle (1:40.49);
  • Cypress Lakes High School sophomore Joel Nace – 13th place, 100-yard butterfly (50.65) and 14th place, 200-yard freestyle (1:42.20);
  • Cypress Woods 400-yard freestyle relay – Daniel Choi, Brock Borak, Zach Hays and Benjamin Scholl – 15th place (3:10.80);
  • Cypress Woods junior Daniel Choi – 13th place, 500-yard freestyle (4:31.55); and
  • Cypress Woods sophomore Benjamin Romig – 14th place, 1-meter diving (298.55).
