Bridgeland High School art teacher Nancy Hines’ artwork titled “All These Years” was selected to be part of the Lunar Codex project, which is due to arrive on the moon on Feb. 22 via the Intuitive Machines’ IM-1 Nova-C lunar lander Odysseus.

Hines’ laser-etched microfiche image of her painting “All These Years” was included in the Nova Collection Lunar Codex lunar time capsule, aboard the Intuitive Machines’ IM-1 Nova-C lunar lander Odysseus. The Odysseus launched on Feb. 15 and entered lunar orbit on Feb. 21. It is due to land on the moon at approximately 4:30 p.m. CST on Feb. 22.

Simulcasts of the event will be on Space.com and the NASA TV website.

The Lunar Codex project was started by Dr. Samuel Peralta, who previously had his writing included in the Writers on the Moon project, a lunar time capsule comprising of 125 authors. Peralta wanted to include other artists, authors, musicians and filmmakers in a similar project as a way to spread hope in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hines learned of her inclusion in the Lunar Codex in 2021. She created her chosen piece after being asked to create artwork that could be sold at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo art auction. The  piece features the hands of 1987 Bull Riding World Champion Lane Frost’s parents. Frost’s father is seen wearing his world championship ring and his mother is wearing Frost’s wife’s wedding ring. Frost died in 1989 in a bull riding accident.
