Dec. 10, 2021—Bridgeland High School architecture students partnered with VLK Architects to participate in the 25th Annual CANstruction Houston Competition and Exhibition on Nov. 6, with the team earning the “People’s Choice Award,” the “Most Cans Award” and the “Best Meal Award.”

CANstruction is an international nonprofit organization aimed at providing canned goods to local food banks by hosting competitions where teams consisting of architects, engineers, contractors and student mentees design and build large structures made of cans. After the competitions, the food is donated to local food banks.

Using the theme “Stop Hunger,” the team created a structure titled “Good Night Hunger” inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting Starry Night. The structure was built from more than 6,900 taco-inspired canned food items and all food was donated to the Houston Food Bank.

Using the 2021 competition theme “Stop Hunger,” the team of Bridgeland students and VLK Architects created a structure titled “Good Night Hunger” depicting the story behind Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting Starry Night. The structure was built from more than 6,900 taco-inspired canned food items, including beans, corn, nacho cheese and included taco spice packets and taco shell boxes to help create the village.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Bridgeland High School for all their hard work,” said Krista Thomas, VLK architect, team captain and a 2010 Cy-Fair High School alumna. “The students helped by solving some design challenges and also helped collaborate ideas to make our CANsculpture come to life. We are ecstatic to have been able to help the Houston Food Bank, too. We hope that through this event, we can impact the lives of those in our surrounding community.”

The 16 competition structures were on display at The Understory in downtown Houston through the voting period. All canned food items used in the competition were donated to Houston-area food banks.
