National Merit Award winners honored at recognition program

April 21, 2022—Three hundred fifty-one CFISD students were recognized as National Merit Scholars or College Board National Recognition Scholars and honored at a ceremony on April 12 at the Berry Center. Of those recognized, 13 were confirmed as semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Of nearly 1.5 million entrants to the National Merit Scholarship Program, approximately 50,000 qualify for recognition. Those honorees placed among the top percentage of students who entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

National Merit semifinalists from Cy-Fair High School are: Alejandro Cantu, Lillian Chang, Catherine Sabotta and Carson Stark.

Cypress Creek High School’s National Merit semifinalist is Yahya Sohail.

Cypress Falls High School’s National Merit semifinalist is Jenny Lu.

Cypress Ranch High School’s National Merit semifinalist is Miguel Kalen Alarcon.

National Merit semifinalists from Cypress Woods High School are: Tanvi Khandekar, Phuc Le and Benjamin Yonas.

Jersey Village High School’s National Merit semifinalist is Issac Sal.

National Merit semifinalists from Langham Creek High School are: Parnika Mandewalkar and Ashvin Ramabadran.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The 13 semifinalists were among the approximately 16,000 throughout the U.S. selected by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Finalists advance to have the opportunity to win one of approximately 7,500 Merit Scholarship awards, while roughly 1,100 outstanding participants who are not finalists are eligible for special scholarships. Semifinalists placed among the top 1 percent and Commended Students placed among the top 3 percent of about 1.6 million students who entered the Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). CFISD has 79 total Commended Students.

Bridgeland High School’s 11 Commended students are: Anika Adkar, Austin Gabino, Elisa Grillo, Katherine Holt, Jennifer Lin, Nicholas Matias, Jack Myles, Riley Oxford, Allison Pawlak, Varsha Ravi and Divya Tulluri.

Cy-Fair’s 12 Commended students are: Audrey Arroyave, Anna Beasley, Rebecca Bishop, Austin Fang, Sarah Hart, Brynn Hausman, Madison Hrncir, Elise Lefler, Syna Sogi, Tamima Tahsin, Andrew Tran and Carson Wiley.

Cypress Creek’s eight Commended students are: Eva Davila, Joshua Fagan, Elizaveta Filonova and Lilia Hayduchok.

Cypress Falls’ Commended student is Maddie Pearson.

Cypress Park High School’s Commended student is Minh Quan Duong.

Cypress Ranch High School’s six Commended students are: Sara Bills, Gabriel Bizi, Dennis Gao, Thuy Nguyen, Reina Patel and Carla Silva Mendez.

Cypress Ridge High School’s four Commended students are: Kayla Bui, Elizabeth Jung, Alexandra Kim and Christina Pham.

COLLEGE BOARD NATIONAL RECOGNITION PROGRAM

To create pathways to college for underrepresented students, the College Board National Recognition Program honors and recognizes high-achieving students who are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, or attend school in a rural area or small town. Those scholars who excelled on their PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 or Advanced Placement Exams are encouraged to apply for academic recognition as part of the College Board National Recognition Program.
