April 21, 2022—Langham Creek High School senior Ryan Linton was recently awarded a $40,000 scholarship from Amazon’s Future Engineer program, becoming just one of a few hundred across the entire United States for the Class of 2022. Making the program even sweeter from just the merit-based scholarships are paid internships at Amazon.

Linton said there was plenty to celebrate when he found out he landed the scholarship.

“They sent a box to my house with all the acceptance stuff,” he said. “My mom cut it open and we saw a sign that read ‘$40,000 scholarship winner.’ We all just went crazy, jumping around the house.”

Amazon awarded $40,000 scholarships to 250 students in 2022, for a total of $10 million, more than double the company’s commitment from previous years. In addition, scholarship recipients will also receive an Amazon paid internship after their freshman year of college to gain hands-on, practical work experience with mentorship from company leaders.

Amazon Future Engineer, the company’s philanthropic education program, has awarded $22 million in scholarships since 2019. Recipients are based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, community involvement, work experience, future goals and financial need. This year’s recipients represent more than 30 states and U.S. territories. More than 70% of scholarship recipients represent groups currently underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

Linton is interested in computer science, which ranks among the fastest-growing professions with STEM fields.

“I was trying to find ones that fit me,” he said. “I wanted to not have as much of a financial burden to pay for college. I was thinking I need a scholarship that will not only fit my needs financially but lead to bigger and better opportunities in the future.”

Linton and other scholarship winners also receive a guaranteed, paid 12-week summer internship at Amazon after completing their freshman year of college. Future engineer interns works on software engineering teams and on Amazon’s technology and platforms. They’ll also meet mentors and senior leaders, and collaborate through projects and social events.

“It will be an interesting place to work,” Linton said.
