Bridgeland High School’s UIL One-Act Play, Spring Awakening, was selected to advance to the Region II-6A competition on April 27 at University High School in Waco.

April 24, 2024—Bridgeland High School’s UIL One-Act Play production was selected to advance to the Region II-6A competition following the Area One-Act Play contest hosted April 13 at Magnolia High School.

The top three plays from each area competition advance to the region contests. By advancing to the region contest, Bridgeland’s production Spring Awakening is among the top 24 Class 6A plays in the state.

“We proudly represent the Bridgeland Theatre Company and CFISD for the fourth consecutive year at the Region II-6A One-Act Play competition,” said Adam Delka, Bridgeland head theatre director. “Advancing to region ranks Bridgeland theatre among the top 24 Class 6A schools in Texas. While our play was written in the 1890s, many of the messages and themes are relevant to our world today. Our competition company of 24 actors, technicians and alternates has been working extremely hard to remain competitive at each level, with the ultimate goal of telling a beautiful story, making people think and hopefully changing people’s lives through telling this story. Our drive, dedication and love for the UIL contest provides an exciting spring semester as we advance through each level of competition, as we have fought hard each step of the way to earn our spot to the next level. Please send us your thoughts and heartfelt “break-a-leg” as we travel to Waco this weekend.”

Cypress Ranch High School’s UIL One-Act Play, The Old Man and The Old Moon, was selected as an alternate to the Region II-6A competition.

“Although our journey has ended with being named as an alternate to region, the memories will last a lifetime,” said Cheryl Bradford, Cypress Ranch head theatre director. “I am so very proud of this amazing company for their creativity, work ethic and tireless hours put into bringing this epic tale to life. What I am proud of most is it was truly a pleasure working each and every day with this amazing group as they are sweet, kind, creative and truly are remarkable humans. To my directing team, Tracy McGarity, Seth Bales and Jackie Poole, I could never do this alone and I’m so glad we get to create, laugh and life each other and the students up on the daily. We will all keep the memories we made together tucked away in our hearts forever.”

We’re immensely grateful to our administration for supporting this meaningful production that resonates with our students and the broader community. We are grateful for the UIL One-Act Play program as it instills the purpose and progress of theatre throughout all high schools in Texas. The rich history of the competition continues to bring both theatre professionals and enthusiasts together to tell complex stories and celebrate the arts throughout our educational communities. Theater’s purpose is to reflect society’s truths and we believe our production accomplished just that.
