Bane Elementary School saw major renovations and additions completed for the 2017-2018 school year thanks to a $1.2 billion Bond voted for in 2014. Among the renovation projects included a new gym, administration area, classrooms and kitchen area to the school.

Feb. 15, 2018—Bane Elementary School (5805 Kaiser Street) was one of four CFISD elementary schools to receive major renovations and additions completed for the 2017-2018 school year thanks to a $1.2 billion Bond voted for in 2014.

The construction project by ICI Construction began in August 2015, with the renovation contract costing $14.6 million. As CFISD’s oldest facility, Bane first opened in 1936, with the “new” building in use since 1972.

“The community is very proud of the school,” said Dr. Carrie Marz, Bane principal. “We have seen an increase in parent visitors at school events and at lunch time. We are still undergoing changes and with each new change, we hear praise for the school. The first day the students and parents visited during ‘Meet the Teacher’ in August, their mouths literally dropped open.”

The large-scale project renovated the school’s existing 60,000 square feet of space while adding approximately 40,000 square feet to the campus, including a new gym, administration area, classrooms and kitchen area. This is the fifth renovation project – but by far the largest – at Bane since 2005.

Formally a school with two buildings connected by a walkway canopy, one building was demolished.

“This was a safety concern and we feel much more secure with everyone under one roof,” Marz said. “We also have all new furniture to go with our new school. This means that teachers have modern classrooms with flexible furniture and the latest technology which helps them to meet the needs of our diverse learners.”

Bane administrators and staff gave input and suggestions during the process, giving them ownership to their campus. They in turn, shared information and pictures of the school with community members, helping grow the Bane community as the new campus became a reality. This is just another example of “CFISD for All” and Dr. Mark Henry, superintendent of school, crediting the district’s ability to give every student within its boundaries the same experience.

“We are all proud of being the site of the first school in the district,” Marz said. “We have the largest percentage of students on free lunch, but – as Dr. Henry often says, in CFISD students need a beautiful learning environment with up-to-date facilities no matter what their zip code is.”



As CFISD oldest’s facility, Bane Elementary School first opened in 1936, with the “new” building in use since 1972. The campus has undergone its fifth renovation project since 2005.
